Therapeutic Approach
Dr Yong is an accredited Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience across Malaysia, the UK, and the United States, offering a deeply grounded and culturally attuned therapeutic approach. Her work has been shaped by roles in the NHS, specialist therapy services, and international NGOs supporting refugees and asylum seekers who have experienced significant trauma. These experiences allow her to meet clients with sensitivity, nuance, and a broad understanding of the different contexts in which emotional struggles can emerge.
She works collaboratively and relationally, creating a space where clients feel safe to explore their inner world and the patterns that shape how they relate to themselves and others. Drawing on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), and Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), Dr Yong supports clients in developing emotional regulation skills, understanding long-standing relational dynamics, and working through deeper emotional processes that may be contributing to distress or a feeling of being “stuck.”
Her approach is both trauma-focused and culturally sensitive, honouring each person’s lived history while helping them build new ways of responding, relating, and connecting. She often integrates compassion-focused and mindfulness-based strategies to support clients in cultivating emotional balance and a kinder, more grounded relationship with themselves.
Offering therapy in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese, Dr Yong is attuned to the cultural, familial, and relational contexts that shape psychological wellbeing. She welcomes clients of all backgrounds and works alongside them to foster meaningful, lasting change in how they understand themselves and how they connect with others.

Experience
I have trained and worked in Malaysia, the UK, and the United States, bringing together a wide breadth of clinical experience and a deep appreciation for cultural diversity. My professional journey has included roles within NHS community mental health teams, specialist therapy pathways, and multidisciplinary settings, as well as work with international NGOs supporting refugees and asylum seekers who have experienced significant trauma.
My experience living, studying, and working across various countries has shaped my understanding of identity, belonging, and the challenges of navigating multiple cultural worlds. This helps me connect with clients who hold cross-cultural or migration experiences and offer a space where these complexities can be explored with care. These experiences inform my therapeutic approach by helping me view each person within the context of their culture, relationships, and lived history, allowing therapy to be both sensitive and deeply attuned to individual needs.
What to Expect
In the first session, Dr Yong invites clients to slow down and begin gently making sense of their inner world. This initial conversation offers space to explore what feels difficult in the present, the emotional and relational patterns that may have been carried for many years, and/or the personal, cultural, and familial contexts that shape their experience. Together, they also consider what the client hopes might feel different going forward, establishing a shared foundation for the work. Many clients experience this first meeting as a sense of relief, offering a chance to be heard with depth, attunement, and care.
As therapy continues, the work unfolds at a pace that feels safe and manageable. Dr Yong supports clients in mapping their emotional landscape, recognising long-standing protective strategies, and connecting with the deeper feelings beneath them. Through this process, she helps clients build insight, develop emotional clarity, and make meaningful shifts in entrenched patterns. Her intention is not only to help clients cope with what feels overwhelming, but to support them in moving toward a more grounded, connected, and authentic way of relating to themselves and others.
Sessions last 50–60 minutes and are typically offered weekly or fortnightly, depending on the client’s needs and the therapeutic pace that feels right for them.
